Uno's Pizzeria In Boston's Kenmore Square Has Closed

BOSTON — It's an end of an era: The Boston-based deep-dish pizza spot that is Uno's has closed its last remaining Boston location, the company confirmed to Patch.

A spokesperson from the company said the building has been purchased as part of the Kenmore Square Redevelopment Project.

It's unclear how much the coronavirus pandemic played into the decision to close the restaurant. However, such closures are becoming familiar as businesses large and small struggle with either months of closure or severely diminished business amid the pandemic. The Kenmore Square is steps from Fenway Park, which used to be teeming with baseball fans looking for food.

According to the blog Boston Restaurant Talk, Uno Pizzeria and Grill in Kenmore Square closed its doors this week. This follows the closure last year of the chain's Back Bay location and the closure of the Huntington Avenue spot in 2018.

There are still 18 locations listed as open on the pizza and grill's website, including those in Braintree, Dedham, Framingham, Revere, Worcester and Swampscott.

The chain and its signature deep dish pizza started in the 1943 in Chicago with founder Ike Sewell. according to the company's website. In 1979, Aaron Spencer opened his first UNO's franchise on Boylston Street in Boston. Spencer then built up the business and began a consumer products division in the basement of one of his Boston restaurants in 1988. That division moved to Brockton and corporate headquarters are in Norwood.
