Unprecedented Heavy Rainfall Brings Flooding to Japan

Regions of Japan were flooded on August 14, with the Japan Meteorological Agency calling for the “highest level of caution” amid “heavy rain like never before” in the Saga, Nagasaki, and Fukuoka prefectures.

This video captured by Twitter user @aki_luxion, who said he filmed it in Kurume City, shows several inches of floodwater.

The agency warned of a high possibility of landslides and flooding for all three prefectures on August 14.

According to Kyodo News, record amounts of rain were observed in Unzen and Shimabara in Nagasaki prefecture, with over 800 millimeters (31.5 inches) observed at Mt Unzen in the area from Wednesday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The amount is more than twice the usual monthly precipitation for August. Credit: @aki_luxion via Storyful
