UN Secretary-General to meet with Zelenskyy as Ukraine keeps absorbing attacks

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Thursday, as Russian forces continue to circle in on a steel plant in Mariupol considered the last legitimate holdout from the Russian advance into the Ukrainian city. The U.N. humanitarian office began coordinating the evacuation of civilians from the steel plant Wednesday, a day after after Guterres reached an agreement in principle with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but Russia has reneged on previous deals for safe corridors. The U.S. also has reliable information that Russian military forces executed Ukrainians who were trying to surrender near Donetsk, an official said Wednesday. Meanwhile, Ukraine's General Staff said in a Thursday morning update that Russia is increasing the pace of its offensive in the east of Ukraine, the goal of which is to take full control of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Survivors unite to deliver message on Israel's Holocaust Remembrance Day

Sirens blared across Israel early Thursday to mark Yom HaShoah – Israel's Holocaust Remembrance Day – as the country came to a standstill in an annual ritual honoring the 6 million Jews murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators. People halted where they were walking, and drivers stopped their cars to get out of the vehicles as people bowed their heads in memory of the victims of the genocide. Ceremonies were planned throughout the day at Israel's national Holocaust memorial, parliament and elsewhere. About 165,000 survivors live in Israel, a dwindling population that is widely honored but struggling with poverty. Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett ushered in the day Wednesday with a stark message, warning Jews against letting internal divisions tear society apart. After leaders in both Ukraine and Russia drew parallels between their ongoing war and the genocide during World War II, Bennett also called on the world to stop comparing the Holocaust to other events in history.

CNN+ to shut down two days earlier than previously announced

Warner Bros. Discovery originally announced that streaming news service CNN+ would shut down on April 30th. But, according to a Digital Trends report, subscribers received an email confirming the service will shutter Thursday, April 28th. The news is confirmed by a CNN.com Help Center page, which states that CNN+ subscribers will receive a full refund and subscribers won't need to cancel their subscription themselves to get the refund. In a statement last week while announcing the shuttering of the service, CNN Worldwide Chairman and CEO Chris Licht said the network is part of the company's broader streaming vision, and expects to combine elements of it with a planned merger of HBO Max and Discovery+. CNN+ featured a variety of programs including live daily and weekly shows, live news coverage and original TV shows and movies. The service recruited top news talent, including ex-Fox News host Chris Wallace.
