'Untimely death' at state prison in Berlin under investigation, not considered suspicious, officials say

Oct. 3—The state Department of Corrections announced an "untimely death" at the state prison in Berlin on Tuesday.

Around 4 a.m., corrections staff noticed an inmate in the health services unit who "appeared to be in distress" at the Northern New Hampshire Correctional Facility, officials said in a news release.

The man was pronounced dead a short time later.

The death is not considered suspicious, corrections officials said. State police are assisting with the investigation into the man's death, officials said, and the Attorney General's Office has been notified per department protocols.

No additional information will be released until the inmate's next of kin are notified, and an autopsy is completed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, officials said.
