Unveiled: 'world's largest' corundum sapphire

The gem was found three months ago but only put on show on Sunday (December 12) in Horana, home to one of the gem pit's partners.

Gem expert Palitha Gunesekera said the pebble weighs 310 kilograms. It has been named the "Queen of Asia".

Almost 90 percent of all corundum stones found in the world are from Sri Lanka famed for centuries for its unique gemstones.
