UPAWS currently booking appointments for Spay Day 2024

MARQUETTE COUNTY, Mich. (WJMN) – UPAWS is giving low-income residents of Marquette County the opportunity to get their pets spayed or neutered at a low cost for a limited time.

Spay Day 2024 is approaching and in honor of that, UPAWS is working with veterinary clinics in the area to provide spay or neuter surgeries for dogs, cats or bunnies at a fraction of the normal cost. This is an initiative to lower the number of un-fixed pets and control the overpopulation of pets. Laura Rochefort, a vet assistant at UPAWS, says people who want to book a Spay Day appointment can go directly to the UPAWS shelter to apply. She explains what they’re looking for to book that appointment.

“There are a few requirements that we do need to see. One is being a resident of Marquette County, the other is having proof of some kind of government assistance, so that can be social security, food stamps, items like that,” says Rochefort. “And when they are at UPAWS, they can fill out that application completely. When we look at their proof, if they are approved, we are able to actually book the surgery right then and there. We will call the vet clinic, set up the appointment, and then it’s just a matter of waiting until that day for the owners to get them to that appointment.”

Rochefort is encouraging those who want to apply to do so as soon as possible as appointments are first-come-first-served by approval, and the appointments are quickly filling up.
