UPDATED: Two die in head-on crash on Ind. 37 just south of Bloomington Monday

Two people, including a Bedford woman, died Monday afternoon when two cargo vans collided on Ind. 37 at the intersection with Zike's Road just south of Bloomington.

The drivers of both vehicles — a 2012 Chevrolet Express van and a 2015 Mercedes Sprinter van — were trapped and died at the scene of the 3:16 p.m. head-on crash, according to a Monroe County Sheriff's Office news release.

They were identified as 43-year-old Darra Jones of Bedford and 47-year-old Brian Hersley of Westport. Autopsies and toxicology tests are scheduled for both to determine their cause and manner of death, Monroe County Coroner Joani Stalcup said.

Neither vehicle had any passengers.

According to the news release, an accident reconstruction expert determined the south bound Chevrolet van driven by Jones was traveling on Ind. 37 when she "signaled to the right shoulder, then suddenly veered left, crossing the median," crashing head on into the northbound Mercedes van Hersley was driving.

When deputies arrived, they found the drivers trapped. IU Health Lifeline Ambulance Service and Monroe Fire Protection medics administered emergency medical care, the news release said. The Monroe County Corner’s Office ruled Jones and Hersley died at the scene.
