Upgrade coming to Lion's Club Park

Nov. 15—Less than a week after breaking ground on its new multi-million dollar sports complex and civic center, the city of Cullman made strides to improve one of the area's smaller community parks.

Council president Jenny Folsom noted how Lion's Club Park — more often referred to as East Side Park — located on Seventh Street SE is the oldest community park within the city. She also said it was the final park under the city's recreational umbrella due to receive upgrades during the city council meeting Monday, Nov. 13.

The city will be applying for a $500,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund grant administered through the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs to partially fund the upgrades.

"That money would go a long, long way in upgrading that oldest community park which dates to around 1969," Folsom said.

The LWCF program provides 50% cost-reimbursable grants for the development or renovation of public outdoor recreational facilities.

Not listed on the evening's agenda was an announcement from local attorney Melvin Hasting, who formally announced his candidacy for Cullman County 32nd Judicial Circuit Court Judge, Place 2 in the upcoming 2024 election.

The Place 2 seat is currently held by the Honorable Martha Williams, who will not be seeking re-election. Also vying for the position will be Cullman County Commission attorney Emily Niezer Johnston.
