Upper Saddle River to break ground on 9-acre sports complex with pickleball court

UPPER SADDLE RIVER — A groundbreaking ceremony Saturday will celebrate the anticipated start of construction next spring on a 9-acre sports complex at Lake Street and East Crescent Avenue.

Mayor Joanne Minichetti estimated that about 80% of the $1.6 million cost will be financed with open space funds.

The project includes two parallel soccer fields, two overlapping ballfields, a 0.3-mile walking path, pickleball courts, bleachers and a refreshment stand/field house.

"We have had a large turnover of empty-nesters selling their homes to families with school-age children, who we are sure will welcome this addition," Minichetti said.

The multi-year project will require annual applications for open space funds to pay for parts of the project.

The project is on 9 acres of the 48-acre former Pearson Education campus. The other 39 acres is under construction as a 208-unit townhouse complex with 22 affordable units, one of four affordable housing sites approved in February.
