Upper West Side Continues To Lead NYC In COVID-19 Rates

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY — The Upper West Side is, unfortunately, continuing its run at the top of the city's COVID-19 rates.

For the most recently recorded week, April 9 to 15, the Upper West Side has two ZIP codes among the three highest rates in New York City, and also the two ZIP codes with the most new people positive.

Here are the top five ZIP codes with the highest seven-day percent positive rate:

1. Financial District (10006): 15.32 percent

2. Upper West Side (10023): 12.32 percent

3. Upper West Side (10069): 12.13 percent

4. Upper East Side (10075): 11.27 percent

5. Upper East Side (10021): 10.95 percent

To put these numbers in perspective, the average rate in the city during the week was 4.76 percent, and certain ZIP codes had rates as low as 1.2 percent.

In terms of overall total cases, the Upper West Side also led the five boroughs.

The neighborhood's 10025 and 10023 ZIP codes had the first and second most new COVID positives from April 9 to 15 in the city.

1. Upper West Side (10025): 295 new positives

2. Upper West Side (10023): 253 new positives

3. East Williamsburg (11211): 206 new positives

4. Brooklyn Heights (11201): 204 new positives

5. Upper West Side (10024): 201 new positives

From March 20 to 26, the 10025 ZIP code also had the most new positives in the city (169), and two other Upper West Side ZIP codes were in the top five.

It means that the Upper West Side has led the city in total weekly COVID cases for around 30 days.

It is worth mentioning that the Upper West Side ZIP codes are near the top of the median daily test rate in New York City. While it is not nearly a complete explanation for the neighborhood's higher case rate, more tests do mean more positives cases.

However, that is not an explanation for the UWS percent positivity rate remaining higher than the rest of the city.
