Uptown Cabaret home to disappear soon as $700M South End high-rise breaks ground

A Chicago developer is breaking ground this week on a $700 million, skyline-defining project between uptown and South End.

Riverside Investment and Development’s project Queensbridge Collective will total close to 2 million square feet.

The 42-story apartment tower with 409 units will be completed first, according to the developer. A 35-story, 600,000 square foot office tower also will be built on the 3-acre site at 1111 S. Tryon St.

The project is expected to be complete by mid-2025. There will be 30,000 square feet of retail.

The development initially displaced the popular Midnight Diner, which has since reopened about a mile away.

Another business on the site — the strip club Uptown Cabaret — will not be part of the new project, according to Riverside. Plans are set to demolish the building by next month.

It’s not clear whether the club has plans to relocate. The owner did not return a phone call from The Charlotte Observer on Wednesday.

Here’s what else you need to know about the project.

Riverside Investment and Development’s Queensbridge Collective project will include a 42-story residential tower with rooftop pickleball courts.

Rooftop pickleball? Check.

The residential tower will have pickleball and basketball courts on the roof, Riverside said in a news release. It also will have a golf simulator, co-working space, private dining connected to a restaurant and pool on the top floor.

A rooftop restaurant is planned to open with the first portion of the project, according to the release. The office will have private outdoor space along with amenities like a gym.

The site is a short walk to the Carson LYNX Blue Line station.

Two towers only at Charlotte site

The Riverside project was initially going to include three towers. But an investigation of the conditions underground led Riverside to scrap one, Tony Scacco, Riverside’s Chief Operating Officer has said.

The project is the first for Riverside in Charlotte.

More South End towers going up nearby

South End is seeing a number of office and apartments towers under construction.

Work is underway on 110 East, a 23-story office tower just off the East/West LYNX Blue Link station.

Another Chicago developer, Sterling Bay, has plans to break ground on a high-rise luxury apartment tower this year.

Also nearby, Stiles and Catalyst Capital Partners have plans for a 30-story luxury apartment tower at the former walk-up Southern fried chicken joint Price’s.
