‘Urban Skijoring spectacle’: Why Salt Lake City is dumping 500 tons of snow onto the street

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — More than 500 metric tons of snow will be dumped on West Temple this week for the city’s Salt Lake Winter Roundup: an “urban Skijoring spectacle,” according to Visit Salt Lake.

There will be road closures on West Temple from 100 South to South Temple for the festival:

  • West Temple Southbound lane (or West side of the road) between 100 South and South Temple will be closed beginning Thursday, Feb. 8 at 12:01 a.m. through Feb. 11 at 5 p.m. This includes all lanes of Southbound traffic.

  • West Temple Northbound Lane (or East side of the road) between 100 South and South Temple will be closed only during the day of the event: Feb. 10 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Visit Salt Lake and Staker Parson are collaborating with Salt Lake County to kick off the festival, which reportedly aims to highlight Salt Lake’s rich heritage and legacy in sports and culture.

The festival is set to feature one of the country’s first “urban Skijoring spectacles”: a fusion of ski racing and rodeo, according to Visit Salt Lake. Additionally, there will be a lineup of former Olympic alpine racers, mechanical bull riding, live music, line dance lessons, and more.

The Salt Chalet, located between Salt Lake’s Visitor Center and Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, will also have curling lanes available throughout the month for those “looking to test their stone sliding ability,” Visit Salt Lake said.

Art installations at the site will reportedly be themed around winter spots, highlighting the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Additionally, with Salt Lake’s recent naming as the “preferred partner” for the 2034 Games, there will be “a taste of the cultural Olympiad that is to come,” Visit Salt Lake said.

Visit Salt Lake President and CEO Kaitlin Eskelson said the Winter Roundup will showcase Salt Lake’s energy and passion.

“We are excited to transform the street and celebrate our past, present, and future with the community,” she said.
