Urbana co-op features locally sourced flowers for Valentine’s Day

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Millions of flowers are sold across the country for Valentine’s Day. But one Central Illinois business wants people to rethink where they buy them to help the environment.

Common Ground Food Co-Op in Urbana is hoping to get the community on board with lowering their carbon footprint.

The flowers in their store are bought from local farmers and vendors. Buying local means less travel and less gas. It also means more money in Central Illinois farmers’ pockets.

“We want to make sure that our money is going to fair working conditions and wonderful food. So that’s what that’s what our priority is,” Marketing Manager Sarah Buckman said.

The business gets its flowers from Delight Flower Farm in Champaign and Finding Eminence Farms in McLean County.
