A new urgent care location is coming to the State College area, Mount Nittany says

Centre County residents with minor aches and pains may have another option for same-day care by the time spring rolls around.

Mount Nittany Health plans to open a 2,400-square-foot location in the Hills Plaza along South Atherton Street, the health care system wrote in a statement Tuesday.

The new location is expected to be open daily and be available to everyone, not just Mount Nittany Health patients. No appointment would be needed.

The lease is effective Oct. 1, the health system wrote. The location is expected to open in the spring.

“When you or your loved ones are feeling ill, you want to get care right away,” Mount Nittany Health Physician Group Chief Medical Officer Dr. Christopher Hester said in a statement. “Our new location will make it easier for you to receive care for such illnesses as cold and flu, sore throats, ear and sinus infections, sprains and joint pain, and minor injuries, burns and rashes, without needing to schedule an appointment in advance.”

The expansion would be one of several in the works for the health system.

Plans include construction of a $350 million addition to Mount Nittany Medical Center that would allow for all-private rooms, as well as a $36.5 million diagnostic wing project. The opening of an outpatient facility in Toftrees West was planned for 2024.

The health system is also pursuing Level IV trauma center accreditation, though plans are in their infancy. The accreditation process typically takes two years at minimum, the executive director of the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation said.
