The head of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Samantha Power, said the money will be used to purchase backup power generators for water and heating supply systems in Kyiv. The fund will also be used to purchase gas turbines, transformers, and other energy equipment.

The funding will be allocated as part of the Ukraine aid package approved by U.S. Congress in December 2022.

Ukraine’s energy system is substantially damaged after 12 massive waves of Russian air strikes, which began in October 2022. In addition, more than 10 GW of generation capacity remains unviable to the country’s power grid, largely due to Moscow’s occupation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP).
