US already procuring NASAMS air defense systems for Ukraine, says Pentagon, but delivery date unknown

"I do not have the detailed information on the specifics of the contracting process but we are already in the process of procuring the system," he said.

The Pentagon representative said that the United States took up the issue of purchasing NASAMS systems for Ukraine after the announcement of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative on July 1.

The U.S. Department of Defense said the allocation of the military aid to Ukraine, the 14th package worth $820 million, would include NASAMS air defense systems.

Ukraine has been requesting that its allies provide it with weapons, including air defense systems, since before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 23.
