US Brig Niagara will remain docked until mechanical issues are resolved

The U.S. Brig Niagara will remain at anchor at the Erie Maritime Museum for a while at least.

The ship's sailing schedule has been temporarily suspended due to mechanical issues.

The Niagara typically offers day sails when it's home in Erie during the summer. But those won't happen until the mechanical issues are resolved.

"Updates will be provided after a full assessment of the situation has been made and a potential path forward is identified. Our collective goal is to resume Niagara’s sailing program as soon as possible," spokespersons for the Flagship Niagara League and Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission said in a joint news release Monday.

The PHMC administers the Erie Maritime Museum. The Flagship Niagara League is a nonprofit organization that facilitates public participation aboard the reconstructed Battle of Lake Erie warship.

The Niagara briefly visited Sandusky, Ohio, on July 6.

The ship remains open for deck tours Wednesdays through Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. Tours are included included with museum admission.

Day sails, sunset sails and occasional full-moon sails are available aboard the schooner Lettie G. Howard as scheduled, weather permitting.
