“With the liberation of Kherson, one of the prisoners of war was released,” said Kovalev.

“He turned out to be a U.S. citizen – Suedi Murekezi – who was ‘arrested’ for defending our country.”

According to Kovalev, Murekezi is already free and returning home. He was arrested in Kherson, and there was no contact with him for a long time.

Murekezi’s capture was made public by his relatives and a group of volunteers who are involved in rescuing U.S. nationals.

His brother, Sele Murekezi, said that Suedi, who has been living in Kherson for more than two years, was arrested by Russian troops in June. Suedi didn’t get in touch with his relatives for a month. On July 7, he called Sela and said that he was now being held in occupied Donetsk.

Murekezi moved to Ukraine four years ago, settling down in Kherson in 2020. He told his brother that Russians accused him of participating in pro-Ukrainian rallies in Kherson.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Kherson on Nov. 14. The Ukrainian flag now flies above the recently liberated city.
