Jordan Peele explains the meaning of rabbits in 'Us,' says it's an Easter movie (exclusive clip)

We already knew that Us, the latest slice of genre greatness hatched from the mind of Jordan Peele, was chockfull of Easter eggs.

But did you know he considers it an actual Easter movie, too?

It starts with the rabbits, which we knew the tethered fed upon in the underground, and stirred plenty of speculation after the film's theatrical release.

"They symbolize a lot of different things," Peele says in a clip from the new Blu-ray release (watch exclusively above). "The main connection to me was Easter. This story is a dark Easter of sorts."

Red, the doppelgänger to Lupita Nyong'o's Adelaide, "is The Messiah," the writer-director explains, "who's rising from the hole [from] which she was left for dead."

As for the larger meaning behind those bunnies: "The animals in my story represent this battle between science and religion," Peele says. "I tend to like to explore the gray area where religion and magic and the unexplainable meet science. Between the two you have an abomination, a metaphor for humanity."

Deep.
