U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs James O'Brien has said a report by Bild tabloid suggesting that Washington and Berlin aim to push Ukraine into talks with Russia is untrue, Reuters reported on Nov. 27.

"We have always said that Ukraine should decide on this matter," O'Brien said.

The German federal government also denied the claims made in Bild's report, saying that Berlin "firmly stands by Ukraine."

"Since the beginning of Russia's aggressive war, the United States and Germany have been committed to ending Russian aggression and achieving a just peace in Ukraine,” the government stated.”

“This cannot be an imposed peace... We will support Ukraine as much as necessary to protect it against Russian aggression."

Bild, citing an unnamed source in German government circles, reported on Nov. 24 that the United States and Germany want to force Ukraine into negotiations with Russia by reducing arms supplies.

U.S. news channel NBC reported that U.S. and European officials began privately discussing the possibility of "peaceful negotiations" with Russia on Nov. 4. The EU and the United States later denied this.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy implemented the National Security and Defense Council's decision to prohibit negotiations with Putin on Sept. 30. This was in response to the attempted annexation of Ukrainian territories.

Secretary of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov reiterated on Oct. 21 that there would be no negotiations with Russia as long as it continues to occupy Ukrainian territories.

President Zelenskyy also stated the impossibility of negotiations with Russia, emphasizing that “Putin does not want peace.”
