'We Are Us: The Human Condition' continues through Feb. 24 at Lubeznik Center for Arts
MICHIGAN CITY — The exhibit “We Are Us: The Human Condition” continues through Feb. 24 at the Lubeznik Center for the Arts, 101 W. 2nd St.
"We Are Us" was curated around a series of portraits by Alex Katz, who revolutionized traditional portraiture and landscapes to create modern paintings by minimizing detail and demonstrating the personal doesn’t need hyper-realism to be impactful.
The exhibit highlights the unique capacity of the arts, as an accessible form of communication that exists beyond language and time, to depict and document the human condition in its many forms.
From the joy of everyday life and desires of connection, permanence and betterment, to loneliness, marginalization and the fight to survive, the artists in this exhibit make clear the personal is often universal.
“We Are Us” features the works of Ivan Albright, Romare Bearden, Greg Breda, Mandy Cano Villalobos, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, John Divola, Ron Herman, Ulrica Hydman-Vallien, Lester Johnson, Alex Katz, Käthe Kollwitz, Jacob Lawrence, Cydney Lewis, Hung Liu, Yolanda López, Ruth Morgan, Alice Neel, Dean Porter, Ramiro Rodriguez, Edward Ruscha, Therman Statom, Lisabeth Sterling, Stephanie Trenchard and Carrie Mae Weems.
A free Family Day, with art projects and snacks, takes place at 1 p.m. CST Feb. 11.
Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. CST Sundays; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. CST Mondays and Wednesdays through Fridays; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. CST Saturdays.
