US Inspectors General visit Kyiv to strengthen oversight of aid

Inspectors general from the United States Departments of Defense and State, as well as the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) arrived in Kyiv, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink announced on Twitter (X) on Jan. 29.

"Pleased to welcome back to Kyiv three Inspectors General from the Departments of Defense, State, and USAID,” Brink said.

“Their meetings with implementers, partners, and the Ukrainian government support oversight and accountability for U.S. assistance to Ukraine.”

Review of Ukraine's use of military aid

U.S. auditors collaborated with the World Bank and accounting firm Deloitte in Kyiv to conduct their audit in Jan. 2023. The inspection, led by U.S. Defense Inspector Robert Storch, aimed to ensure transparent use of international assistance, including military aid.

The inspectors were joined by the Defense Ministry’s internal audit service and the Armed Forces of Ukraine, together with the Defense Cooperation Department of the U.S. Embassy.

White House National Security Council Coordinator John Kirby previously announced a halt in U.S. military aid to Ukraine, pending Congressional approval for additional funding.

The results of the review did not reveal any serious violations related to U.S. aid to Ukraine at the time.
