US News names top 10 high schools in Maine: Check out who made the list
US News & World Report has released its annual set of state-by-state rankings of top high schools, and schools in Kennebunk, Limestone, Cumberland, and Cape Elizabeth were among those at the top of the list in Maine.
The publication said it reviewed about 24,000 public high schools around the US, including 113 from Maine. It reviewed the schools using six indicators, including college readiness, state assessment, and its education of underserved students.
“A great high school educates all students from different social and economic backgrounds, exposing them to challenging coursework on the path to graduation,’’ US News said in releasing the annual rankings.
The top 10 in Maine are:
1. Greely High School, Cumberland
2. Kennebunk High School, Kennebunk
3. Maine School for Science and Mathematics, Limestone
4. Cape Elizabeth High School, Cape Elizabeth
5. Falmouth High School, Falmouth
6. Camden Hills Regional High School, Rockport
7. Yarmouth High School, Yarmouth
8. Greenville Consolidated School, Greenville
9. Katahdin Middle/High School, Stacyville
10. Scarborough High School, Scarborough

According to the Boston Globe, Massachusetts had the most schools in the top quarter of the schools ranked by US News. Among New England schools, Maine ranked lowest, according to the Globe analysis.
The school rankings are not without criticism. Journalist James Fallows has repeatedly questioned the rankings for colleges and other schools and author and podcaster Malcolm Gladwell also denounced the US News college rankings.
