US News & World Report ranks University of Texas as No. 10 public university in nation — again

The University of Texas remains the 10th-best public university in the nation, according to the 2022-23 U.S. News & World Report rankings.

U.S. News ranked 1,500 colleges and universities based on student outcomes, faculty resources, expert opinions, financial resources, student excellence and alumni giving. The annual rankings, which were released Monday, consider a school’s graduation rate, first-year retention rates, undergraduate student-faculty ratio and other metrics.

UT tied with the University of California-Davis and the University of Wisconsin-Madison to keep its No. 10 ranking among public schools for the second year in a row. It also remained at No. 38 overall among the nation’s top universities, tying for the position with the same two schools.

UT remains at its highest overall national ranking by U.S. News since 1985. Two years ago, the university was ranked as the nation’s No. 13 public university and the No. 42 school overall in the United States.

UT’s undergraduate programs continued to receive top honors, with business ranking at No. 7, engineering at No. 9 and computer science at No. 11. Last year, U.S. News ranked UT’s business program No. 5 and both its engineering and computer science programs No. 10.

Rice University in Houston still reigns as the No.1 overall university in Texas, and it climbed two spots to tie with Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., for the position of No. 15 school in the nation. However, UT continued its streak of being named the top public university in Texas and the No. 2 university in Texas overall.

U.S. News listed 32 other universities in Texas in its national rankings. Texas A&M University tied with four other schools at No. 67, Southern Methodist University tied for No. 72 with four other schools, and Baylor University tied with five other schools at No. 77.

Princeton University earned the top spot among all the nation’s schools. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology ranked second, and Harvard University, Stanford University and Yale University tied for third.
