US Open golf 2022 LIVE: Third round scores and updates as Matt Fitzpatrick co-leads heading into Sunday

Follow all the latest updates and leaderboard moves from the third round of the US Open at Brookline, Massachusetts, after a host of big names got themselves in contention ahead of the weekend.

The Open champion Collin Morikawa led the way on Saturday morning alongside fellow American Joel Dahmen on five-under-par, but there were plenty of rivals in a tightly congested chasing pack, including world No3 Rory McIlroy and No2 Jon Rahm one shot back on -4. The world No1 Scottie Scheffler began two shots off the lead, while other notable chasers include the in-form Sam Burns (-2), Olympic champion Xander Schauffele (-1), and England’s Matt Fitzpatrick (-2), who won the US Open junior title at this venue.

Brookline has proved a challenging course so far and McIlroy illustrated exactly that on the third hole on Friday when he sent his approach into thick fescue grass, which he took three swipes to escape from before pulling off a brilliant 20-foot putt to limit the damage to a double bogey in an otherwise solid round. “I think I have to go out with the mindset this week that I’m going to try to win my first (major) again,” McIlroy said afterwards. “I’m playing as good a golf as I’ve played in a long time.”

Joel Dahmen has a birdie shot at 18 but it misses and he settles for 74. That’s a battling round after the start he had and leaves him at -1, only three strokes off the lead.

Meanwhile, a disaster for Collin Morikawa as he shoots 77 to drop to +7, a tie for 17th. Not what he had in mind when he entered the round holding the lead.

All Rahm can do from the greenside bunker is stab the ball up beyond the hole and he’s left himself probably 20 feet to save bogey.

Zalatoris and Fitzpatrick will be leading the US Open heading into Sunday and in the final group but will Rahm also be at -4 or drop to -3?

He sends his putt down the hill but it’s always left. It’s a DOUBLE BOGEY! A round of 71, he drops back to -3 and he’ll be a shot beyond Fitzpatrick and Zalatoris. He’ll be in the penultimate group with Keegan Bradley tomorrow.

Oh no! He mishits the ball and it cannons into the lip of the bunker and rolls back to his feet. Disaster for Rahm.

Another go for the defending champion. He’s out this time but it’s sand to sand... He’s in the front greenside bunker and the ball looks plugged. This could be a double bogey easily...

Putt for McIlroy from around 20 feet for birdie. He’s been making putts for fun on this back nine and sends this one down but it drifts just right.

It’s still a par, an incredibly battling round of 73 and he’s at -1. That will be four or maybe only three back of the lead, depending how Rahm ends on 18.

Rory McIlroy pull out yet another par as his long par putt at 17 juuuuust reaches the hole and he glares it in. That’s eight one-putts in th least nine holes for Rory! He’s been battling.

Up at 18, Scottie Scheffler gets out of the sand but leaves himself 15 feet for par pin high. He nails it and fist pumps. That’s a round of 71 and he’ll head into Sunday at -2. Huge moment for the world No 1.

Matt Fitzpatrick talks about being in contention heading into Sunday at the US Open.

“I did feel comfortable out there,” he tells Skt Sports. “I didn’t hit my irons well on Thursday but did some work, changed a slight positioning thing and it has felt better since.

“It would mean the world to win this. It’s a special place for me [having won US Amateur at Brookline]. To go one step further and win a US Open round here would be even more special. The US Amateur was one of my biggest achievements, but playing well tomorrow and winning a major would overtake it.

“My family are in town, I’ve got a couple of friends here as well, which is nice. I’ll have plenty of distractions which is good. My tee time will be late, so I need to keep busy tomorrow but I’m excited. To give myself another chance in a major, I’m proud of the way I played. Hopefully I’ll go out there and play well tomorrow.”

He put his second shot into the heart of the green at 15 and has maybe 30 feet for birdie. It’s long but not the trickiest putt, sets it on its way and holes it!

A great second shot at 17 bounces him within a few feet of the flag and he tidies up the birdie. Much needed after a disastrous back nine and he’s at -2, two shots back.

He saves a par with a gutsy putt at 15 to remain at -1. Another man at -1, Sam Burns, stays there as his birdie attempt at 18 stops rolling. Tap-in par for a decent round of 71.

Doesn’t really get up the requisite speed and he’ll be left with 20 feet or so for par. It’s a putt for 67 and the likely solo lead heading into Sunday but even a two-putt is a 68 and co-lead with Zalatoris.

“For crying out loud man! The wind just died. What a freaking day”.

Fair to say the Spaniard isn’t happy as he tries to save par at the 13th, needing to get up and down from 100 yards after his tee shot goes right.

The third shot goes about 35 yards past, prompting the exclamation about the wind. Not a good putt as it races by and he’s got work to do to make bogey...

Clutch! Right in the middle of the hole. That could be a good bogey, although he’s back to -2. A couple of gettable holes coming up.

The home favourite has been lapping up the crowd reaction at Brookline and although his birdie putt at 18 doesn’t drop, it’s a par, a round of 69 and he heads into Sunday at -2.

Hard to see anyone bettering Zalatoris’s -4, so that will be just two shots back. He’ll likely be in the final two groups on Sunday and is right in contention.

He struggled on his front 9, although his three bogeys haven’t looked as bad as the round has worn on and others have faltered.

Now he gets one back at 11 after a gorgeous tee shot which leaves him around 12 feet, a left to right putt. Never anywhere but the heart of the hole! He’s up to -2 and suddenly that’s T4.

He was never out of it but right in the thick of things now.

Then at 16, a safe shot to the heart of the green, good crack at the long birdie putt and a tap-in par. He’s only got two holes to go, which at the US Open is definitely a good thing when you have the lead

He failed to get fully out of the rough with his second shot and then pitched only to about 20feet away. That bogey putt missed and he tapped in for a double.

The 8th has been, erm... eventful for Jon Rahm.

His tee shot goes behind a tree, he uses the back of his club to turn it into a left-handed club to get the ball out and then gets a free drop for being near an immovable obstacle.

He absolutely crushes the third shot to get it up into the greenside rough, where he’ll have a chance at an up-and-down for par. Would be an incredible par given the tee shot.

Joel Dahmen heading backwards today as he started at -5 but a third bogey at the 7th has him at -2, where’s he’s joined by Morikawa after the double disaster.

Patrick Rodgers drops one at the 10th, so he’s now at -3 and in trouble at the 11th going from one side of the green to the other.

Rodgers duffs the chip out of the rough and it rolls back into the rough, where he’ll now pitch for bogey... Good pitch, next to the hole and a tap in double bogey has him at -1.

It’s a DOUBLE BOGEY at the 7th. His tee shot is into the rough and he’s having to scramble from there. Leaves himself about 18 feet for par in the first cut and has a real thrash at it. It races a long way by and he misses the bogey return.

That sums up Rory McIlroy’s day. A poor second shot leaves him short of the 8th green in two but a lovely wedge with his 3rd leaves him less than 10 feet for birdie.

But it’s not a good putt and it misses wide left. That was a must-make birdie. He stays at -1.

Rahm’s been flushing his irons but his putter has been ice cold so far on moving day. Until the 7th hole!

Tougher birdie look than at the 5th and 6th but from 18 feet, the reigning champion hits it on line and it’s in the heart of the hole. Birdie to move to -4, a tie for 2nd with the gettable par-5 8th up next.

His tee shot ends up on the top some rocks. Puddingstone rock I believe it’s called in this neck of the woods. He’s lucky to have a shot at all, truthfully and he’s able to get out on the fairway.

The putter really not behaving for Jon Rahm. A seven-foot birdie look at 5 doesn’t drop and then a ten-footer at 6 after a world-class iron shot into the green is jabbed at by the Spaniard and never looks close.

He looks frustrated, rightly so, and those are shots left out there.

The tee shot isn’t great but he has a nice lie from the rough and uses the strength of his game, the irons, to put an approach close to the hole. Rolls in the birdie and he’s at -5, a shot behind Scheffler.

Scottie Scheffler moves to -6 as he pitches in for eagle at the par-5 8th!

His tee shot is wild so he can’t reach the green in two but it doesn’t matter. For the second time at this US Open a pitch from the fairway of around 100 yards lands on the green, feeds to the hole and drops.

The world No 1 is on fire and he’s now got a two-stroke lead at the top. The Master champion is rolling at Brookline

Hmmmm. Morikawa’s 4th hole is turning into a bit of a nightmare. His nominal shot for par is a tricky pitch and he can only land the ball beyond the hole.

That’s probably 15 feet just to save bogey, maybe 20 feet. It’s a left to right putt, down the hill, and Collin strikes it beautifully! IT trickles towards the hole, holds its line and falls. That could be a massive moment - what a bogey save!

He drop to -4 but that’s still the co-lead and he avoided a nasty number on the scorecard.

Scottie Scheffler probably competing with Matt Fitzpatrick and Will Zalatoris for the contender who is playing the best so far today and he’s millimetres away from moving to -5 as his birdie putt at 7 slips by the hole.

Movement at the top with both our co-leaders in trouble. Aaron Wise can’t save his par from out of the bunker, so it’s a bogey and back to -4.

Collin Morikawa’s tee shot at 4 is in the thick rough and he can’t make the green. A pragmatic shot out sideways leaves him 92 yards for the up and down to save par. Oh dear! Doesn’t hit it well and misses the green short left. Morikawa now scrambling for bogey and -4 will soon be the leading score.

Fitzpatrick’s eagle look came up short but he knocks in the birdie putt and he moves to -3, which is a tie for 5th. He’s going well.

Jon Rahm did indeed make that par putt at the 3rd. Good save for the reigning champ.

Aaron Wise looked in prime position after his tee shot at 5 but his second found the bunker - a surprisingly poor strike. The pitch out is ok but work to do for par. A bogey the more likely result and he may fall out of the lead.

After three-putting the 1st, Matt Fitzpatrick has struck the ball superbly. He gained that shot back at the 5th and now has a live eagle chance at the par-5 8th.

He reaches the green with two big thwacks and the ball feeds left towards the flag. Outside chance of the eagle as he’s around 19 feet away but should be a birdie at least for the Englishman, which would move him to -3 - just two back.

Excellent pitch from the rough to the right of the 4th green by Jon Rahm. Very quick down the hill but he judges it well and should be able to save par from close range. Will keep him at -3 if so and that would constitute a good result.

Collin Morikawa is starting to demonstrate some of the iron play that has won him two majors already.

He’s looking composed out there and at the tricky 3rd, he launches an approach up to the top tier of the green to leave himself a good look at birdie.

I think there’s only been one birdie all day at the 3rd - which went to Sam Burns.

Much like McIlroy, Rahm can’t get up and down form just off the back of the 2nd green. His par putt comes up short and he drops to -3.

And McIlroy than makes it back-to-back bogeys. His pitch is a bit heavy at the 3rd and it’s a decent-looking par putt but millimetres wide. -2 for the Northern Irishman now.

Collin Morikawa might be the best iron player in the world and after a lovely tee shot at the 1st, our co-leader has 178 yards to the pin. A nice approach and he’ll have a look at birdie from maybe 15-20 feet.

Matthew NeSmith has slipped out of contention as he bogeys the 2nd and double bogeys the 3rd. Three shots gone and he’s at even par.

Better for Will Zalatoris who sinks a nice put at the 9th and that birdie means his front nine is a two-under-par 33. Superb play from Zalatoris who is back up to -3.

Jon Rahm pars his 1st to stay at -4 but the tee shot at the 2nd is McIlroy-esque, just off the back of the green. Will be a good par from there.

In better British news, Matt Fitzpatrick birdies the 5th after playing it exactly how it should be. Confidently sinks an eight-footer for birdie and the shot he dropped at the 1st is earned back.

McIlroy bounces over just the back of the green from his tee shot at the par-3 2nd and is unlucky that the lie isn’t great. His pitch gives him a tester for par and the putt is bang on like, looks set to drop but somehow teeters on the edge and stay out!

He taps in for bogey, that’s a shot gone and back to -3.

That is money from Scottie Scheffler! Rips his tee shot down the right side of the fairway at 3 and although it’s a blind green, he plays a peach of an iron shot that rolls within a few feet.

Almost a kick-in birdie upcoming for the world No 1 and he’ll climb back to up to -4 - one off the lead.

Turned out Rory had a decent lie in the rough left of the 1st fairway and a wedge into the green. Hie goes more or less straight at the flag though and it bounces through into the first cut at the back of the green. Up and down needed to save par.

Scottie Scheffler gives back the shot he gained on the 1st as his tee shot on the 2nd is to the right, he can’t get it out of the rough with his second and even the third gives him a tester for bogey. He sinks it though, so just the one shot dropped - back to -3.

Beau Hossler also drops to -3 as his long par putt on the 1st never troubles the hole.

There hadn’t been a single birdie on the 3rd today until Burns played it. A solid approach leaves him a look at birdie from 20 feet and he curls it into the hole. Brilliant putt and he goes to -3.

Fitzpatrick almost follows him in for birdie but his putt is marginally wide. Par for the Englishman to stay at -1.

Brilliant start for Scottie Scheffler. We mentioned the world No 1 found the bunker with his opening tee shot but he muscled the ball up to the green and it bounded forward to within about 10 feet of the hole.

He then rolled the birdie putt in and moves to -4, only one stroke back of leaders Dahmen and Morikawa.

Playing partner Matthew NeSmith salvages par after a dicey first putt to stay at -3.
