US Open golf 2022 LIVE leaderboard: Matt Fitzpatrick edges Will Zalatoris to win at The Country Club

The final round of the US Open 2022 is here with Will Zalatoris and Matt Fitzpatrick sharing the lead at -4 at Brookline, while defending champion Jon Rahm is in striking distance just one shot behind.

Blustery, testing conditions have ensured the Country Club has shown its teeth throughout the week, with just nine players under par, including Rory McIlroy, who battled through a torrid third round to remain in contention at -1 despite opening up yesterday with a three over par score for his first seven holes. World No 1 Scottie Scheffler briefly got to -6 when he holed out from 102 yards for an eagle on the eighth, but the American fell away sharply, producing double bogey on the short 11th with two more bogeys following, though the Masters champion is just two back and primed to capitalise should the leaders slip. Among the other names to watch are home favourite Keegan Bradley, a former PGA Championship winner, who is two-under, as is Canada’s Adam Hadwin, and those at one-under and hoping to surge up the leaderboard include Sam Burns and Joel Dahmen.

“I’d be lying if I said I haven’t thought about it [winning]. It would just mean the world,” said Fitzpatrick, who could become the first non-American to win both the US Amateur and US Open. “It’s a special place for me and to go one step further and win a US Open round here would be even more special. The US amateur was one of the biggest achievements in my career and still is, and if I won a major here it would definitely overtake it. My family are in town, I’ve got a couple of friends here as well and the family I am staying with are fun as well, so I’ll have plenty of distractions which will be good with a late tee-time. I’m excited to give myself another chance in a major just a month later, I am just really proud with the way I played.” Follow all the action from the fourth and final round of the US Open below:

It’s Zalatoris to go first at the 18th. He takes the aggressive approach off the tee with a driver and it’s a fantastic fade that just misses the bunkers down the left.

Fitzpatrick steps up for the highest pressure tee shot of his entire career. And he turns it over and it hooks into the bunker down the left! What’s more, he’s quite close to a bit of the face that juts inwards. It’s going to be very difficult to find the green from there.

Up on the 18th green, Scheffler has a birdie putt from 23ft to tie Fitzpatrick for the lead. It’s a fantastic effort but it just slips past the hole. He’s in the clubhouse at -5.

Fitzpatrick now has a birdie putt that would give him a two-shot lead down the last but it’s so quick down the slope. He barely touches it and it trickles on the low side for a simple tap-in par.

Fitzpatrick goes first and hits a fantastic pitch just past the flag. He’ll have 11ft for birdie but it’s straight down the hill after sticking on the bank.

Zalatoris goes next and he does get the backspin off the slope. He’ll go first from 12ft but he’ll have the advantage of going up and across the slope.

The final group head to the 16th tee. Fitzpatrick just about flies the bunker and gets a decent roll up towards the hole. He’s a good 35ft away from there though and will happily take par.

Zalatoris needs something special and oh boy does he deliver. From 210 yards, he flies it to just 6ft!

But here comes Scheffler! After that fantastic drive at 17, he sticks his pitch to around 5ft and he’s not missing a short one this time. That’s a birdie to get within one. Can he birdie the last?

Zalatoris has a good go but the ball dies just to the left of the hole. That’s a tap-in bogey but Fitzpatrick now has the chance to stretch his lead to two... and he makes it! What a fantastic putt. That was almost 20ft away. The Englishman leads by two shots with three holes to play.

Zalatoris has an awkward lie in the bunker with his feet above the ball. It’s a decent effort but he’s going to have 27ft just to try and save par. Fitzpatrick will get a good read off his putt too.

Up at the 17th, Scheffler hits a brilliant drive and will only have around 70 yards to the flag from there. It’s playing as the easiest hole on the course and he urgently needs to take advantage and make a birdie.

Fitzpatrick hits a horrible slice off the tee at 15 but it’s so bad the result is actually rather good. The rough has been trampled down by the spectators, the lie is good and the angle into the green is great. The flag is still 225 yards away but it’s a fantastic shot that flies right at it. He’ll have 19ft for birdie.

Zalatoris leaked his drive right but only marginally. Unfortunately for him, that means the rough is still intact and the ball is really sitting down. He pulls it right trying to gouge it out and he finds the front left bunker.

Scheffler finds the green at the par-3 16th and has around 30ft for birdie. It’s a tricky putt and it just dribbles low of the hole. It’s a good par but he still trails by one.

Back-to-back birdies at 14 and 15 got him to -2 and evoked memories of his stunning finish at Augusta, but he finds the front bunker at 16. He does very well to get up and down though, holing a 10ft right-to-left putt to save par.

Scheffler was playing so well on the front-nine but he’s lacked a spark since those bogeys on 10 and 11. He misses the green at 15 but a cute chip gets him safely up and down. The world No 1 is still only a shot back.

Fitzpatrick goes aggressive with the birdie putt and sends it a good 5ft past the hole.

Zalatoris then leaves his birdie putt high of the hole but that’s a simple par for the American, even if it’s certainly a chance missed.

Fitzpatrick three-putted at the 11th but he holds his nerve this time. The pair head to the 15th with nothing to split them.

Fitzpatrick goes aggressive from the fairway at 14 and lashes a brilliant 3-wood up onto the second tier of the fairway. That went a good 260 yards and skipped past the bunker through such a tight gap.

Zalatoris made the top shelf too and it’s him to go first from 94 yards. That’s a great pitch and he’ll have 10ft for birdie.

Fitzpatrick goes next and only has 70 yards to the flag but it’s a very disappointing effort. He comes up short and is fortunate it doesn’t roll back onto the front half of the green.

Scheffler only has 6ft for birdie at 14 after that exceptional pitch but he gives the slope too much credit and pushes it on the high side of the hole. That’s a huge chance missed for the world No 1 and he knows it.

What a stunning response from Fitzpatrick! He’s 48ft from the flag with a putt that’s going down and across a huge slope. He’s just trying to lag it to the flag but it trickles down the slope, picks up speed and rattles the middle of the flag. There’s a huge fist pump from the Englishman.

Suddenly the pressure on Zalatoris is huge. It’s far from easy but he was able to get a good read from Fitzpatrick’s putt and the ball just catches the right lip and drops. That was a great save to avoid a two-shot swing. The pair are tied for the lead at -5 with five holes to play.

That’s a brilliant effort out of a jumpy lie. Zalatoris will have about 10ft to save par.

Up at the par-5 14th, Scheffler misjudged his second and got caught in the rough just before the second tier of the fairway. The lie is poor but the world No 1 plays it wonderfully, pre-empting the lack of spin and the ball rolls up the green and settles well within birdie range.

Zalatoris’s line is blocked by a tree and he’s forced to lay up short of the water. It’s still a tricky punch and the ball catches the downslope and runs into the rough. It’ll be a very tricky up and down from there.

Fitzpatrick plays it safe and hits it 240 yards to the middle of the fairway. It’s a good 200 yards in from there and he turns his approach over a little and it draws towards the back left corner of the green. It’s on the surface but it’ll be a very tricky downhill putt from there.

Matsuyama does hole that putt and a 65 is not only the best score of the day but the entire week. The 2021 Masters champion sets the clubhouse lead at -3.

After being forced to lay up in the fairway, Zalatoris has to try and get up and down from 84 yards. The pitch pulls up a fraction short though and spins back into the fringe. He has a fine effort from there but the ball dies off just at the end and that’s a tap-in bogey for our leader.

Fitzpatrick stands over his putt knowing a birdie will see him regain a share of the lead but he leaves it short. It’s a simple par though and the lead is cut to just one at the top.

Matsuyama has played brilliantly today. He’s five-under for his round and standing over a long putt for birdie at the 18th. He knows he needs to make it to move to -4 and give himself an outside chance and unsurprisingly the ball sails quite a way past the hole. That’ll be a tricky one to save par and avoid tainting what’s been a fantastic performance.

Fitzpatrick meanwhile is in a great position with 160 yards to the flag. He doesn’t love the approach but it’s still safely on the green and he’ll have a 25ft putt for birdie.

This is far from over though. Zalatoris steps onto the 13th tee with that newfound lead and slices his tee shot into some thick rough down the right. Fitzpatrick goes next and finds the heart of the fairway.

The final group comes to the short par-3 11th. Zalatoris and Fitzpatrick’s tee shots are almost equal, both settling right of the flag and leaving around 17ft for birdie. It’s the American to go first and he holes it!

Fitzpatrick got a great look at the line but there’s a bit of a rush of blood and his putt dives low of the hole and runs on about 4ft. The return effort lips out. A huge two-shot swing and the US Open is suddenly very much Zalatoris’s to lose.

Now it’s Fitzpatrick who falters! He found the fairway at 10 but it’s a giant par 4 and he still has 200 yards to the pin. His approach catches the front bunker and he misses a 5ft putt to save par.

Zalatoris found the green and had a long look at birdie but is forced to settle for par. That’s still good enough for a share of the lead now though.

Fitzpatrick turns his tee shot over at the 6th and, although the ball just about holds onto the green, he’s left with a horrible 66ft putt across and down the slope towards the front right edge. He does give it a great look but it just slips past the flag and runs on a good 5ft. The return up the hill lips out and that’s his first bogey of the day.

Up at 8, Scheffler catches his second into the par 5 a touch fat and it rolls all the way back down the false front.

It’s starting to look very much like a two-horse race between Scheffler and Fitzpatrick.

Zalatoris does at least manage to put himself back in the rearview mirror though with a wonderful tee shot at the 6th. That should be a simple tap-in to take him back to -3, however, nothing is ever routine with the American’s dodgy putting stroke.

Back on the 1st tee, the defending champion Jon Rahm gets his round underway with a perfect drive.

It doesn’t look like we are going to get anyone storming through the field from further back. Hideki Matsuyama is playing nicely though and moves to level par for the tournament with back-to-back birdies at 6 and 7.

Nobody is playing better right now than Guido Migliozzi, though. The Italian has just completed an excellent round of 66 and is up into T17.

McIlroy has never come from behind to win a major before but could today be the day? It’s certainly a fine start with a huge drive that settles in the semi-rough down the right-hand side.

Burns isn’t so precise. His drive is pulled and clips a tree down the left. He gets quite a kind bounce out into the rough though.

Here we go then. Rory McIlroy is about to get his final round underway. The Northern Irishman starts three shots back as he bids to win his first major since 2014. He’s playing alongside Sam Burns, who has already won twice on the PGA Tour this year.

Seamus Power has holed a nervy 5ft putt for par at the 2nd and he’s just four shots back of the lead. The Irishman is targeting a second successive top 10 finish at the majors after an impressive outing at the PGA Championship last month.

The South African endured a horrible day yesterday, tumbling way out of contention with a 78, but a birdie at the last completes a gutsy round of 69 today. It’s been tough going for Xander Schauffele, who was in contention until a 75 yesterday. He’s about to tap in for birdie at the downhill par 3 11th, though, after a magnificent tee shot that settled less than a foot from the flag. That’ll take him to +3.

Collin Morikawa had a dreadful day yesterday, carding a 77 after starting in a tie for the lead. He’s back out there now and is level through his opening three holes after missing a makeable birdie putt.

Tarren holes a lovely putt from the fringe at 14 for a birdie. He’s -2 for his round and now up into a tie for 34th. The Englishman, who is ranked No 445 in the world, has only ever had one top 10 finish on the PGA Tour before, and that came in a weakened field at the Puerto Rico Open in March. This is a great performance and comeback after such a disappointing day yesterday.

Patrick Cantlay has endured a bit of a slump by his own high standards this year but the American is up into a tie for 11th after a fine start to his final round. Birdies at 1 and 2 have taken him to +1 and he’s managed to find the green at the tricky 3rd.

Not a great start for Jordan Spieth, who pulled a 10ft birdie putt at the first and then bogeys the second after missing the green short and right at the long par 3.

Thomas couldn’t hole that short one for par at the first either and has slipped back to +4. He will have the chance to make amends at the third, though, after a great blind approach that runs up to the green and settles about 15ft from the flag.

Mackenzie Hughes and Patrick Cantlay are both off to bright starts in their final rounds and are now at +2, six shots back of the lead.

England’s Callum Tarren endured a torrid third round after leading by two shots at one stage on Friday. He’s recovering well today though and is one under through 13 and in a tie for 45th at +6.

Justin Thomas hasn’t had the week he’s wanted, having come into the tournament in such a great run of form.

The PGA champion has just got his final round underway but pulls his approach at the first left and is forced to hit a wonderful flop shot over the greenside bunker. There’s still a bit of work left to save par though. He’s currently +3.

To say Grayson Murray is not a happy bunny out there would be somewhat of an understatement. The American, who is nine over for his round through 12 holes, has laid waste to his wedge.

Despite most of the players out on the course currently struggling, there are still certainly opportunities to go low.

One person proving that is Guido Migliozzi. After birdieing three of his opening five holes, the young Italian has just eagled the par-5 8th with a fine putt from 11ft. He’s now +2 for the tournament which is a very respectable tied-17th.

It’s been a tough afternoon for Koepka’s arch-rival Bryson DeChambeau too. The American is three over for his round. His next outing will, of course, be at the controversial LIV Golf event in Portland in a fortnight’s time.

Brooks Koepka might have won this tournament twice, but he is enduring something close to a nightmare at the start of his final round.

After a double-bogey at the third, where his tee shot was pulled way left and found the cart path, he is in dire trouble again at the short par-4 5th. His drive found the deep rough short of the green, his pitch then sailed over the back and a three-putt seals another miserable double. He’s at +9 now.
