Day two of the US PGA Championship will see the field cut in half as the contenders for the title look to move into position ahead of the weekend. Rory McIlroy battled illness and a poor start to remain in contention as Bryson DeChambeau set the clubhouse target on day one at Oak Hill.

On a course which has drawn comparisons to Winged Foot, the venue for his US Open triumph in 2020, a slimmed-down DeChambeau still possessed enough power to post six birdies and two bogeys in an opening 66 on Thursday.

That gave DeChambeau a one-shot lead over world No 2 Scottie Scheffler, Dustin Johnson and Corey Conners, with Viktor Hovland, Ryan Fox and Keegan Bradley on two under par. Unheralded Eric Cole held the lead overnight on -5, although he only completed 14 holes and promptly double-bogeyed his first hole when returning on Friday morning.

McIlroy fought back from three over par after nine holes to return a 71, while Masters champion and world No 1 Jon Rahm surprisingly slumped to a six-over-par 76.

Club professional Michael Block insisted he could contend for an extraordinary victory in the US PGA Championship as Oak Hill continued to provide a stiff test for the world’s best players.

Block, who is one of 20 PGA professionals in the field in Rochester and the head pro at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in California, carded a second consecutive 70 for a halfway total of level par.

And that was just one behind early clubhouse leader and playing partner Taylor Pendrith, the Canadian adding a 69 to his opening 70 for a one-under-par total later matched by England’s Justin Rose.

He’s still is with a huge chance and trails the co-leaders by just two strokes.

For Bradley, consecutive bogeys on 17 and 18 sees him fall back to level par for the tournament. He was going well for most of the round but a poor run in has cost him a few places.

Bryson DeChambeau’s drive was perfect but an error of judgement with his iron shot wrenches off to the right and lands in a bunker next to the green.

Callum Tarren is the leadin Englishman and the halfway stage and spoke to Sky Sports about his second round which he described as “pretty stress-free”.

“I had just one little mistake on a tough hole but it’s a great score on a tough golf course.” He said, “I feel as though my golf has been pretty good for a couple of years now but just some off-course things that get in the way. It led me to miss quite a few cuts in a row, and I did that last season but obviously finished strong.

“I didn’t press the panic button but I wasn’t in a good place. I wasn’t enjoying playing, especially I was getting too involved in trying to put good scores on the board instead of trying to play golf.

“I did a reset a few weeks ago, I feel good about my game and where my head is at and I have just got to keep going.”

“I felt like I did a good job of grinding today. I had some nice up-and-downs and kept the course in front of me for the most part. Didn’t hit as many fairways as I would hope to.

“Still, to shoot two under, especially on a day where the rough got really wet and it was really tough to play out of, to post a number today was good, solid golf.

“The rain made the golf course easier when you are executing. When you get out of position, I think it’s just as challenging, just because the rough is so wet.”

Callum Tarren takes advantage of the accessible fourth hole to notch up his fourth birdie of the day. This is a great round for him, he’s not made any bogeys and moves within three shots of the lead.

That skill is matched by Shane Lowry. The Irishman has gone on a fantastic run down the back nine. Four birdies in five holes moves him into the red and places him in a great place ahead of the weekend.

Justin Rose admitted his second round of 70 was not quite what it seemed as he remained in contention to double his major tally in the 105th US PGA Championship.

Rose shot level par on Friday to post a halfway total of one under par, despite hitting only two fairways in regulation at a fiendishly difficult Oak Hill.

“Smoke and mirrors I guess,” the former Olympic champion said with a smile when asked how he had pulled it off.

Dustin Johnson! He’s a bit further away than he’d like on the par-3 fifth but a beautifully judged putt for birdie sees him slide the ball across the green and move back within two of the lead.

Kieth Mitchell gives back a shot immediately with a struggling bogey on the the 16th hole. He’s got two holes left today and the difficult 17th still to play.

On the second Justin Rose dinks his third shot just onto the green and leaves another testing putt for par. It’ll another great hold if he can get this one to drop.

The wind is making a difficult course even harder. On the fourth hole, Dustin Johnson decides to play safe and sends his approach into the middle of the green.

He’s a long way from the hole and will be thinking of two putts.

Justin Rose is left with an uphill putt seven feet from the hole. He aims it slightly left and rolls it home for a very well worked par. He’s safely thru 10 holes now and just one back.

Adam Scott has shot a birdie attempt on the 12th from around 15ft. It’s a decent effort that doesn’t get the desired turn from right to left, the putt slides past and Scott remains two-under.

Rose’s most recent poor tee shot leaves him behind a tree on the right side of the rough. He’s not got a shot at the green so has to chip it out sideways.

His next shot is going to be a crucial one. He needs to get it in close to make par.

Up on the 15th Keith Mitchell, who holed a decent putt for par on the previous green, tees off and guides a wonderful shot to within a couple of feet.

The crowd gives him a round of applause and it’s well worth it. What a shot.

Justin Rose is two under for the day but is really struggling off the tee. He’s not hit a single fairway so far in this round and pumps a drive over to the right side rough on the 1st (his 10th hole today).

There’s an aggreviated cuss from Rose when the ball heads off line. If he can sort out his strokes off the tee Rose could get himself in front once again.

Pick that one out! Taylor Pendrith rolls in a 30ft putt for birdie on the par-4 seventh. That’s a steal for the Canadian who moves to within two shots of the lead with two holes of the round left.

Justin Rose drops back though. Out of position on the 18th and zig-zagging across the hole the Englishman fails to get it up-and-down from the edge of the green and gives a shot back to the course.

Dustin Johnson moves within two shots of the leaders! He closes out a perfect hole on the second but knocking in a 10 ft putt for birdie. The distance was the most tricky part of the stroke, it was slighty uphill and dead straight - an easy shot in truth for a player of DJ’s quality.

He’s now up to (-2).
