Chrissy Metz has revealed that a forthcoming storyline on This Is Us will be a network television first.

The actress plays Kate on the NBC family drama, who recently got pregnant after going through IVF with her husband, Toby (Chris Sullivan).

However, during a recent interview, Metz said the pregnancy will see the couple face an "unconventional" challenge that has never before been seen on network television.

"Toby and Kate are going to have a bit of an unconventional parenting situation," she told Entertainment Weekly.

"Not unconventional in that people aren't doing it, but not what I think either of them ever had in mind.

"It's going to be challenging for me as an actress, which I'm excited about - scared but excited. It's something I don't think we've ever seen, at least not on network television."

Executive producer Elizabeth Berger added: "We're going to see very specific struggles that these two have to face, and it's not necessarily something that we've seen up close before."

Recent episodes of This Is Us have fuelled speculation that a split was in store for the couple, after a flash-forward featured Toby without his wedding ring.

Toby has also been seen in the present storyline struggling after coming off anti-depressants to increase the couple's chances of getting pregnant.

Unfortunately, fans will have to wait to see Kate's pregnancy storyline play out in full, but we just hope the couple finally get some sort of happy-ever-after following their tumultuous three-season journey.

But, don't worry: all will be explained.

This Is Us continues Tuesday (November 13) on NBC in the US.
