US Rep. John James builds war chest to $2.4M for 2024 reelection bid

U.S. Rep. John James, R-Shelby Township, is building a sizeable war chest ahead of an expected run for reelection.

On Thursday, his campaign said that during the three-month period ending June 30, James had raised $1.1 million — more than any other freshman member of Congress.

That brings James' total since taking office in January to $2.4 million. After expenses, he has $1.7 million in cash in his campaign coffers for the 2024 race.

It's no surprise that James has been able to raise money: In two unsuccessful U.S. Senate runs and his race in 2022 for the U.S. House seat against former Macomb County Judge Carl Marlinga, he proved himself an able fundraiser.

The money could come in handy, however, given that James defeated Marlinga by half a percentage point, or just 1,600 votes out of more than 326,000 cast in the election. James represents the 10th Congressional District, which includes much of southern Macomb County and parts of Oakland County around Rochester and Rochester Hills.

Marlinga is considering running again next year. Other Democrats currently in the race include Emily Busch, of Oxford, whose son was among those locked down during a deadly shooting at Oxford High School in 2021; financial planner Diane Young, of Warren, and attorney Brian Jaye, of Rochester.

Of those, only Jaye had filed his second-quarter fundraising figures, which aren't due until later this week. Jaye reported raising just over $6,000, nearly $4,000 of which he contributed to his own campaign. He had about $3,400 on hand after expenses.
