'This Is Us' star Mandy Moore dishes on flying with her 'sweet and proud' pilot dad

Mandy Moore dished about taking her first flight with her father during a visit to "The Late Late Show With James Corden" Tuesday.

After visiting Europe in early July, the "This Is Us" star arranged to fly the London-Los Angeles leg of her trip with her pilot pop on July 4. "Captain Don," as she called him in an Instagram post marking the occasion, has flown for American for 40 years and currently pilots long-haul 777 flights out of Los Angeles. Also on the flight: her stepmother, who is a flight attendant for the airline.

"That was so strange," Moore admitted to Corden. "She's like, 'What can we get you to drink?' And I'm like, 'No, no, no, we can't do this.' ... I starved myself and dehydrated myself for the whole flight."

Corden cracked, "I would be the absolute opposite," adding that if any member of his family were waiting on him, he'd be hitting the call button nonstop.

When the British comedian wondered if he'd ever been on one of Captain Moore's flights given how often he flies back and forth between L.A. and his native London, the actress replied, "You probably would have known. I get calls and messages from him all the time: 'Guess who we had on the flight today?' And my dad is very sweet and proud, he's like, 'We had Rami Malek on the flight, and he knows who you are!' "

Such conversations leave the actress "mortified," but on the flipside, "People reciprocate and come up to me and tell me that he's their favorite pilot to fly with."

In a statement to USA TODAY in July, American spokesman Ross Feinstein called Moore "a member of our family," adding that "Captain Don has been a pilot with American since 1979 – and is currently a Boeing 777 captain; you can see they are on a 777 in the photo. Mandy’s stepmother has also been a flight attendant with American for nearly 30 years. We are thrilled they were able to spend the flight together from London to Los Angeles – on such a special day, July 4th."

Captain Moore's name-dropping amused Corden to no end: "So he's the pilot but he's also working the seats?"

Given that Moore just earned her first Emmy nomination for lead actress in a drama series, the talk-show host suspected that will only encourage her father: "Now, he'll be walking the aisles going, 'Are you an Emmy voter? Are you an Emmy voter? Wake up, are you an Emmy voter?'"
