USA TODAY newsrooms in North Carolina receive 7 APSE awards for 2022

Members of three North Carolina newsrooms in the USA TODAY Sports Network were honored in the Associated Press Sports Editors annual writing contest for 2022.

James Crabtree-Hannigan of the Asheville Citizen Times was honored in three categories, placing in the D Division for beat writing, game story and explanatory reporting. Crabtree-Hannigan has covered high school sports for the Citizen Times since January 2021. His explanatory story looked at the hurdles Pisgah High School's football program had to overcome after flooding from Tropical Storm Fred and his report from the Owen High School state semifinal soccer game was a winner in game story reporting.

David Thompson of the Fayetteville Observer won for his feature story on Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant, who grew up in Dalzell, South Carolina.

The staff of the Fayetteville Observer, led by editor Monica Holland, was honored for its June series on the 50th anniversary of Title IX, which looked at progress, problems that remain unsolved and some of the pioneers of women's sports from southern states.

In Division C, Dan Spears and Michael Cuneo of the Wilmington StarNews were honored for game stories written on the UNCW-James Madison men's basketball game in February, and the New Hanover-Laney football game last fall, respectively.

Each winning entry is in a final list of 10 in each category and each division. Winners and rankings will be released later this spring ahead of the organization's annual convention and awards banquet, scheduled for July 9-12 in Las Vegas.
