USA women’s field hockey discovers opponents for 2024 Paris Olympics
(WCMH) — The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris are fast approaching and one of the United States’ teams now knows who they will play in the French capital.
The USA women’s field hockey team has been drawn into its pool for the upcoming Olympic tournament this summer. It is the first time since Rio 2016 that Team USA is in the Olympic women’s field hockey tournament. The Americans earned their Olympic berth after finishing second in the FIH Olympic qualifying tournament in Ranchi, India.
12 teams compete in field hockey with two pools of six drawn. Each team plays each other once with the top four teams in each pool advancing to the knockout tournament. Team USA is in Pool B with notable opponents including 2016 gold medalists Great Britain, 2020 silver medalists Argentina, and two-time gold medalists Australia.

The match schedule has not been determined at this time but the women’s tournament will begin on July 27, the first full day of the Olympics. The gold medal game will be on August 9.

Team USA is ranked No. 12 in the world and are playing in their seventh Olympics. Women’s field hockey has been part of the Olympics since 1980 and the USA’s best finish came in 1984 when they claimed bronze in Los Angeles.
Since then, Team USA’s best finish has been fifth, which they earned twice in Atlanta 1996 and Rio 2016. The Netherlands enter as the defending gold medalists and have won gold in three of the last four Olympics. The Dutch have ended the last 12 years as the No. 1 ranked team in the world.
