USC Upstate sweeps HPU

May 11—HIGH POINT — The High Point University baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader with USC Upstate on Saturday. Upstate took the first game of the day 12-9 and won the second game 10-5, completing a sweep of the three-game series that began Friday.

Travis Holt was the only Panther with multiple hits in both Saturday games, with a total of four on the day, and had a home run in each contest to give him one in all three games of the weekend. Holt is the first High Point player to hit home runs in three consecutive games since Blake Schunk did so from April 3-7, 2018.

Jackson Melton also homered in the first game, sending a no-doubter across the creek and over the Greenway for his first career home run, giving High Point a total of three players with their first career home run over the weekend after Cameron Irvine and Blake Sutton each notched their first on Friday. Brady Pearre also hit one in the second game of the day to give HPU multiple home runs in every game this weekend.

A trio of Panthers ended the day with three hits as Joe Johnson and Peyton Carr had two in one game and one in the other while Sutton had three hits in the nightcap for his second three-hit game of the season.

Despite making four errors in the second game, High Point's defense matched a program record by turning five double plays in the contest.

HPU drops to 14-24 and 12-18 in the Big South while league leader Upstate improves to 33-10, 24-9.

Teddy Merritt was the losing pitcher in the first game. David Keith took the loss in the second.

The Panthers return to action at Longwood today.

UNCA'S EDWARDS HONORED

CHARLOTTE — Jacob Edwards of UNC Asheville, who was a standout at Southwest Guilford, was named the Big South starting pitcher of the week for last week's games, the conference announced Monday.

Edwards allowed just one hit and an unearned run in 6 1/3 innings of the Bulldogs' 3-2 win over Longwood. He struck out 10 batters and walked just two.

PREPS 1A TENNIS REGIONAL

ELKIN — Bobby Peters and Luca Pestana of Bishop McGuinness won the third-place doubles match in the 1A West Tennis Regional at Elkin on Saturday to gain a spot in the state championships on Friday in Cary.

Peters/Pestana defeated Jack Zamudio and Thomas McComb of Elkin in the first round and Jacob Reis and Cutter Law of Lincoln Charter in the second round. Peters/Pestana lost to David Cohen/Parker Dotson then defeated Jayden Gilliland and Preston Cox in the third-place match.

Both teams in the championship match and the third-place winner moved on to the state finals.

ASHEBORO — Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg prevailed in the 602 Modified feature Saturday night at Caraway Speedway. Rich Hunter finished second.

Boo Boo Dalton led most of the way in winning the Late Model feature. Jason Poole became winner of the Challenger race when first-finishing Jason Bess was disqualified for a car weight infraction. Tyler McDonald edged Johnny Baker in a Mini-Stock race.

Other winners were Daniel Hughes (UCAR), David Creed (Bowman Gray Street Stocks) and Matthew Smith (Enduro).
