USD women stay hot, win first Summit League basketball matchup with St. Thomas

The South Dakota Coyote women remained the hottest team in the nation Saturday, notching their 14th straight win with a 70-43 drubbing of St. Thomas at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.

USD is now 9-0 in the Summit League, the longest current winning streak in Division I women’s basketball. They improve to 16-4 overall with the win.

The Coyotes used a 26-0 run in and out of halftime to turn a potentially competitive game into a blowout. USD closed the first half with 15 straight points, then opened the third quarter with 11 more.

Chloe Lamb led the way with 19 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Liv Korngable had 17 points and Maddie Krull 15. Hannah Sjerven had nine points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. The Coyotes made just two 3-pointers in the game but outscored the Tommies 44-22 in the paint and went 10-for-11 at the line. They also held a 37-28 rebounding edge and committed just five turnovers the whole game.

Meanwhile the USD defense held St. Thomas to 32.6 percent shooting and only one made 3-pointer. Jade Hill led the Tommies with eight points.

The Coyotes, who are receiving votes in the Top 25, head back out on the road this week. They’ll visit North Dakota State on Thursday night and North Dakota on Saturday at 1 p.m.

USD men notch fourth straight win

The USD men won their fourth in a row, outlasting St. Thomas 90-79 in the teams’ first meeting as Summit League foes Saturday in St. Paul. The Coyotes improve to 4-3 in Summit League play after an 0-3 start, and are 11-7 overall.

Mason Archambault had 27 points and five rebounds to spearhead the Coyote effort, going 9-of-13 from the floor, 6-of-9 from 3-point land and 3-for-3 at the line. Kruz Perrott-Hunt added 22 points and seven rebounds. USD shot 59.6 percent from the floor and made a whopping two-thirds of their 3-point attempts (12-of-18). Tasos Kamateros had 14 points and Boogie Anderson 13 for USD.

Riley Miller had 24 points for the Tommies (8-10, 2-4) while Anders Nelson added 19.

The Coyotes are back in action on Monday to make up a previously postponed game at Western Illinois, taking on the Leathernecks at 6 p.m. in Macomb. USD then returns home to host North Dakota State on Thursday and North Dakota on Saturday. The Yotes are 8-2 at home this season.
