USF men’s basketball team starting to replenish depleted roster

In the wake of a severe roster hemorrhage, USF’s men’s basketball team has taken initial steps to stop the figurative bleeding.
The Bulls’ latest commitment comes from former George Mason guard Javon Greene, a 6-foot-4 graduate transfer who led the Patriots in 3-point percentage (37.5) and ranked second in scoring (11.5 ppg) last season.
He joins 6-6 small forward Sam Hines Jr. (University of Denver) and 6-7 junior college transfer D.J. Patrick as Bulls pledges.
A former Rivals three-star recruit out of McDonough, Ga., Greene averaged 9.6 points in four seasons and totaled 162 steals for George Mason. He arrives at USF shooting 32. percent (156-for-485) for his career from long range.
He posted arguably his best season as a junior, when he led the Patriots in scoring (13.8 ppg) and finished 10th in the Atlantic 10 Conference in steals (1.8 per game) for a 17-15 club. George Mason finished 13-9 last season, falling to Davidson in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 tournament.
His fellow Georgia natives, Hines and Patrick, hail from Marietta and Atlanta, respectively. Hines averaged 10.7 points and 5.5 rebounds in 20 games as a freshman last season at Denver, which finished 2-19.
Patrick averaged 14.6 points and 4.3 rebounds for Triton College in River Grove, Ill. His 47.4-percent effort from the floor was second-best on the team.
USF has lost nine players — eight to the NCAA transfer portal — since the end of the 2020-21 season and remains the subject of an internal probe regarding allegations of racism by a staffer.
