USF quarterback Katravis Marsh recovering from neck surgery

TAMPA — USF quarterback Katravis Marsh has been released from Tampa General Hospital, a day after having successful neck surgery Monday, interim coach Daniel Da Prato said.

Marsh suffered the injury during a run in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s 41-23 loss to SMU. He was carted off the field on a stretcher and sent to the hospital.

Da Prato said Marsh is in “great spirits” and is expected to make a full recovery. Marsh has been sending videos to the team to stay in touch and could visit with his teammates Wednesday, as USF prepares for Friday night’s game at Tulsa.

“He’s got that big old smile that he has, and he’s obviously a very strong, healthy young man,” Da Prato said during Tuesday’s news conference. “We’re hoping that that obviously just helps him moving forward.”

Marsh inherited the starting job last month when Gerry Bohanon went down with a season-ending shoulder injury. In five games this season, the third-year sophomore from Hialeah was 58 of 113 for 827 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions.

His injury means that true freshman Byrum Brown is in line for his first career start. The three-star North Carolina native has only attempted five passes but threw his first touchdown last week.

Da Prato said Brown has all the physical tools to succeed, starting with a strong arm and 6-foot-3, 206-pound frame. Though Brown likely would have been USF’s No. 4 quarterback at the start of preseason camp, Da Prato said he quickly showed his ability to lead.

“I expect him to continue doing that today, tomorrow and right on into Friday night,” Da Prato said.
