Usher’s ex-wife Tameka Foster wants to drain Georgia lake where son died in boating accident

The ex-wife of R&B singer Usher is campaigning to drain Georgia’s largest lake, the site of her son’s death in a boating accident.

Fashion designer Tameka Foster has already collected more than 2,500 signatures for a petition to “drain, clean and restore” Lake Lanier, a man-made reservoir built in 1957 about an hours drive northeast of Atlanta, and improve safety by removing hazardous debris.

Foster’s 11-year-old son Kile Glover was killed at the lake in July 2012 when he was struck by a jet ski while floating in an inner tube with a friend. Glover died from brain injuries and the friend sustained serious injuries.

Family friend Jeffrey Hubbard was convicted of homicide by vessel, serious injury by vessel, reckless and unlawful operation of his jet ski and a boat traffic violation in 2014 and sentenced to four years in prison and 15 years on probation.

“Draining, cleaning and restoring Lake Lanier is not only necessary but also an opportunity to honor the memory of those who have lost their lives and prevent further tragedies,” Foster wrote in her Change.org petition.

“We appeal to the relevant authorities, including government officials, environmental agencies and stakeholders, to prioritize this critical undertaking. We urge you to allocate the necessary resources, expertise, and funding to initiate the drainage, cleaning, and restoration process promptly.”

The popular lake has had a number of fatal and otherwise dangerous incidents in the last several years, including drownings, other jet ski crashes and explosions.

On July 4, a Florida boy was killed and his grandfather was wounded in a shooting that stemmed from a dispute over jet skis being driven too close to children who were swimming at a beach.
