BREMERTON — The USS Theodore Roosevelt will return to its previous homeport of San Diego in February, following a year-and-a-half of work at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

The warship, which arrived in Bremerton in July 2021, still has several "major maintenance projects" to complete before heading south to California, according to Ben Anderson, a ship spokesman.

The flattop undocked from the shipyard's dry dock 6 in early August, wrapping up  preservation work on the carrier's hull and tanks and completing upgrades to its electronic systems.

Capt. Eric Anduze, the Roosevelt's commanding officer during the overhaul, said its crew had "maintained determined focus throughout a naturally challenging availability."

"The hard work of everyone on our team — our crew as well as our shipyard teammates — has resulted in us completing required milestones on time, and kept us on a trajectory to return to executing the nation's tasking when needed," Anduze said in a statement to the Kitsap Sun.
