In the aftermath of a brutal opening game loss to Sweden, the U.S. National Women's Soccer team delivered a much-needed win, Team USA Softball improved to 3-0 while shutting out Mexico, and Team China grabbed the first two gold medals of the 2020 Summer Games.
JARED QUAY: Good morning, everybody. The 2020 Summer Olympics are in full throttle in Tokyo. And we're going to catch you up on the latest action, including some milestone moments that happened while you probably were still in bed.
All right. We're going to get it going with the medal alert.
Team China secure the first two golds of the games with the women's 10-meter air rifle shooter Yang, Qian. Battling her way to the final eight where she bumped her total scores to an Olympic record of a total of 51.8 en route to the goal.
Not to be outdone, Team China's Jose We grabbed the gold in women's '49 kilogram weightlifting competition while putting up a total of 210 kilograms, which was also an Olympic record. That's amazing strength.
Although yesterday was the first time in nearly 50 years that the US didn't medal on the first day of the Olympics, they're still was planning to cheer about. Like Team USA softball picking up their third straight win outscoring Mexico 2-0.
Once again, there was stellar pitching from Cat Osterman who delivered a six inning 1-hit performance. And Monica Abbott, who struck out the side in the seventh, combined with Ali Aguilar's clutch 2-run single in the third as Team USA had the perfect recipe to preserve the "W" and remain undefeated.
And last but certainly not least, the Women's National Soccer Team looking to rebound after a brutal opening game loss to Sweden. Who by the way look incredible once again doubling up on Australia earlier this morning for the two.
But back to the US, thankfully they got back on track with a six one thrashing of New Zealand. Roosevelt broke the ice when she fired the game's first goal with a 9-minute mark. The US broke through again when Lindsey Horan converted a header pass from Julie Ertz into a header of her own right before halftime.
The header theme carried over to the second half when New Zealand accidentally put the first of two goals in their own net and the second third minute before Betty has got the kiwis on the board with her strike at 72-minute mark.
But right after that Julie got her second assist when she delivered a sweet pass to Christen Press for a go at the minute mark, Press then returned the favor with an assist to Alex Morgan at the 88th minute mark with still the win for the US who even out their record at one-game apiece.
Coming up tonight, Team USA softball will try to stay unbeaten when they take on Australia. And then tomorrow is the much anticipated debut of the US men's basketball team who will get things started against France. We'll be back at you with all the highlights and see you then.
