UT Tyler awarded $300,000 for Pre-Law Academy

TYLER, Texas (KETK) – The University of Texas at Tyler accepted a gift of $300,000 from an alum to enhance their Pre-Law Academy.

UT Tyler announced that Carol Cox Polumbo, a seasoned law practitioner and UT Tyler alumna, gifted the university $300,000 to bolster their Pre-Law Academy, which was created in 2019.

The academy is designed to help East Texas high school students consider and pursue law as a future career, as well as assisting college students with law school admittance. The university said that the gift will help them provide service to more students.

“We are extremely grateful for this generous gift,” said UT Tyler President Kirk A. Calhoun. “And we are particularly grateful to our accomplished alumna for graciously investing in her alma mater and East Texas.”

According to the university, the Pre-Law Academy consists of thee phases:

  • Pre-college: UT Tyler offers programs and hands-on experiences to nurture a desire to study law in East Texas K-12 students.

  • Undergraduate: UT Tyler students may participate in the enhanced pre-law minor, preparing them for a career in law, as well as preparing them for the Law School Admission Test.

  • Graduate: UT Tyler includes a pre-law adviser who works with students in the process of application and admission to law school.

“Having grown up in Tyler, East Texas has a special place in my heart and as an alumni I am very
excited to assist UT Tyler in expanding its Pre-Law Academy,” said Polumbo. “Providing future
generations with additional tools to be successful in pursuing a legal career is an opportunity I am proud to support.”
