Utah reported 6,872 new cases of coronavirus in the week ending Sunday, down 7% from the previous week. The previous week had 7,388 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Utah ranked 25th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 4.6% from the week before, with 750,600 cases reported. With 0.96% of the country's population, Utah had 0.92% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 24 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

The Fourth of July holiday disrupted who got tested, when people got tested and when both test results and deaths were reported. This may significantly skew week-to-week comparisons.

Across Utah, cases fell in four counties, with the best declines in Salt Lake County, with 2,742 cases from 3,151 a week earlier; in Utah County, with 1,108 cases from 1,215; and in Davis County, with 835 cases from 918.

Adding the most new cases overall were Salt Lake County, with 2,742 cases; Utah County, with 1,108 cases; and Davis County, with 835. Weekly case counts rose in three counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Wasatch, San Juan and Summit counties.
