This Utah mom needs help after her wheelchair accessible van breaks

TREMONTON, Utah (ABC4) — A Tremonton family is asking for help after their disabled mother’s wheelchair accessible van broke.

Now, Rebecca McKinley and her family are hoping the community can help get her back on the road.

When McKinley was 32, she was diagnosed with a rare spinal chord tumor called astrocytoma (grade 2).

“It’s wrapped around my spinal chord and it’s affected my ability to walk,” she said.

McKinley uses her motorized wheelchair to get around — her legs do not work, thanks to the tumor.

According to McKinley, if the tumor is removed she may be a quadriplegic. So, she said, “they don’t want to take it to make me worse than I already am.”

McKinley relies on a van to get around and to her job, but that van no longer works — meaning McKinley and her wheelchair are stuck at home.

“I’m depressed. I can’t get to work, you can’t do anything without a vehicle,” she said.

McKinley’s family are trying their best to help her, but this latest challenge is simply too much.

“I’m trying to get a big burden off of my mom’s shoulder’s,” her daughter Stormy Brown said.
