UTEP women road struggles continue in 87-68 loss at Liberty

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – The UTEP women’s basketball team suffered an 87-68 loss at Liberty in Lynchburg, Virginia on Saturday.

UTEP fell to 8-13 on the season and 3-5 in Conference USA play. UTEP is also now 0-6 in true road games this season.

Liberty drained 11 three-pointers on 23 total attempts. Liberty’s Asia Boone had six of the team’s eleven made three-pointers as Boone finished with 19 points. Boone was not the leading scorer of Saturday’s contest. Bella Smuda led the way with 27 points on a very efficient 10-of-12 shooting from the floor.

UTEP’s Jane Asinde posted a team-high 25 points and seven rebounds. Zhane Thompson impressed in her first real action for the Miners since returning from injury, posting a career-high nine points on 3-5 tries from deep. Aspen Salazar also had a good showing for the Orange and Blue, scoring a career-best eight points on 80.0 percent (4-5) shooting in just 12 minutes played.

UTEP shot 45.0 percent (27-60) from the floor, 26.7 percent from three, and 55.6 percent from the foul line. The team grabbed 30 rebounds, had nine assists, six steals and two blocks.

Up next, UTEP will return to the Borderland to take on Battle of I-10 rival, New Mexico State, on Saturday in Las Cruces. UTEP won the first meeting, 81-72, at the Don Haskins Center on Jan. 6 to kick off CUSA play this season.
