Utica police seeking information in thefts of entire ATMs from local stores, laundromat, apartments

Over the last few months, multiple Utica businesses have reported thefts not just of cash, but their entire ATMs, city police said.

A mini mart, delicatessen, laundromat and apartment complex each have reported break-ins in which individuals carried out the machines, Utica police Sgt. Michael Curley said Friday.

"This is rare," he said. "The physical theft of the entire ATM is rare."

Curley said there is no definitive evidence the cases are connected, but they each have been carried out in a similar manner. At businesses on Steuben Street and Whitesboro Street, individuals entered and left with ATMs through broken store windows. At Kennedy Plaza Apartments, the individuals broke a window and left with the machine through the front door, Curley said.

The businesses impacted so far are:

  • Steuben Mini Market, 1400 Steuben St., Utica: Two unknown males and a silver SUV reported.

  • Sabatino's, 1606 Whitesboro St., Utica: Two unknown males reported.

  • Harbi Laundry, 1122 Mohawk St., Utica: Two unknown males reported.

  • Kennedy Plaza Apartments, 2 Kennedy Plaza, Utica: Four unknown people reported.

The Utica Police Department shared security footage obtained of the incidents and asked anyone with information to contact the Criminal Investigations Division at 315-223-3510. Information can also be shared through Mohawk Valley Crime Stoppers at their website, the P3 Tips mobile app or by calling 1-866-730-8477.

Curley said Utica police also are seeking other local businesses with similar experiences, in or outside their jurisdiction.
