UVM men's basketball finalizes nonconference slate with date at Miami

The University of Vermont men's basketball team will play at Miami, one of the last year's Elite Eight teams, to close out its 2022 nonconference slate.

Miami is the final piece of a 15-game nonleague schedule that was officially announced Monday afternoon by the school's athletic department. The Catamounts, the reigning America East Conference champions, will play the Hurricanes of the ACC on Dec. 28. UVM returns seven returnees and added seven newcomers for coach John Becker's 11th season in charge.

Sorrentine returns to Patrick Gym

The Catamounts will play host to a familiar face in their season opener: Brown and associate head coach T.J. Sorrentine come to Burlington for a Nov. 7 date. Sorrentine, the Cats hoops legend, last visited UVM when he had his jersey number retired along with teammate Taylor Coppenrath prior to a 2019 exhibition contest.

UVM to play 6 NCAA Tournament teams

The Catamounts' first road trip to California in seven years is a doozy. They play St. Mary's on Nov. 10, Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 13 and Southern California on Nov. 15. All three teams reached last year's NCAA Tournament. UVM also travels to Yale on Nov. 22 and Colgate on Dec. 10 before heading to Coral Gables, Florida, for the aforementioned tilt vs. Miami for three more nonconference foes who made the 2022 Big Dance.

While not a NCAA Tournament squad from a year ago, Iona was the No. 1 seed for the MAAC league tournament. UVM will face the Rick Pitino-led Gaels in the Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase on Nov. 18 in Uncasville, Connecticut. And Long Beach State, the defending Big West regular-season champs, is among the teams in the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship in the Bahamas, where UVM will head during Thanksgiving week.

Middlebury added to exhibition slate

Four days after its annual contest vs. St. Michael's, UVM will close its two-game exhibition slate against Middlebury on Nov. 2. Longtime Middlebury coach Jeff Brown is a 1982 UVM alum who's guided the Panthers to four NESCAC titles and one NCAA D-III Final Four over his 25 seasons.

Limited home schedule

UVM has eight true road games and four neutral site matchups. That leaves just three nonconference home games: Brown (Nov. 7), NVU Lyndon (Dec. 1) and Toledo (Dec. 20), which won the MAC regular-season title last winter.
