GREEN BAY – University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men’s basketball coach Sundance Wicks announced the hiring of his assistant coaches Thursday.

The list includes Pat Monaghan, Zach Malvik and Nic Reynolds, along with the return of director of basketball operations Adam Owens.

“I am really excited about the staff we have put together here in Green Bay," Wicks said in a statement. "To me, the person is vitally more important than the position. Our young men need to be around master teachers, mentors and leaders who lead from the front. When putting together a staff I believe you hire men who know how to care, connect and compete at a high level, are disciplined, detailed and can cover your blind spots.

“These coaches do all of that and more. They are energy givers, men of intention, artists of their craft, and most importantly consistent, accountable, every day human beings who know how to win.”

Pat Monaghan

Monaghan has been an assistant coach at Southern Illinois since 2019 after previously serving as an assistant at UW-Milwaukee (2017-19), Minnesota State (2011-17), Coffeyville Community College (2008-10) and Wayne State (2006-08).

The Chicago native also was the director of operations at Loyola-Chicago in 2010-11.

The Salukis went 67-55 in Monaghan’s four seasons. He is credited for helping develop forward Marcus Domask, the former Waupun star who has become one of the best players in program history and averaged 16.7 points this season.

Domask recently put his name into the NBA draft process while entering the NCAA transfer portal with one season of eligibility remaining.

While the Phoenix likely would love to bring Domask with Monaghan to Green Bay, it would have to beat out several Power Five schools that have expressed interest in him since he entered the portal, including Wisconsin.

"Green Bay has a winning tradition with its basketball program,” Monaghan said. “The support from the community and region is what makes this program unique. I am thankful for the opportunity to join Coach Wicks' staff while working alongside other successful leaders within the athletic department. Most importantly, taking on the challenge to help our student-athletes develop while reaching team and individual aspirations."

Zach Malvik

Malvik has been the associate head coach at DII Winona State the last four seasons after serving as an assistant at the school from 2014 to 2019.

The Holmen native started his coaching career as an assistant at Saint Mary’s University in 2013.

He had a decorated playing career at Winona, leading the team to a 32-4 record and the DII national championship in 2005-06.

The former point guard graduated with 1,971 points and a school-record 549 assists.

“I couldn't be more excited to join the Phoenix family and help Coach Wicks bring new life into the program,” Malvik said. “My family and I have always loved visiting Green Bay and we're looking forward to being there. I have so much belief and confidence in what Coach Wicks will do as the leader of this program.

“Being a Wisconsin native and having spent much of my career recruiting this state, I'm ready to hit the ground running and help us find the type of players that will elevate our program to the next level. I'm really excited to be a part of the community."

Nic Reynolds

Reynolds, who is from Peoria, Illinois, was an assistant coach at Southern Arkansas this season after serving as the director of basketball operations at the University of Denver in 2021-22 and an assistant coach at Purdue Northwest in 2020-21.

He was a graduate assistant at the University of Illinois-Springfield from 2019-20 and an assistant at Columbia College in 2018-19.

Reynolds is a 2018 graduate of Columbia, where as a player he was part of three conference championships and four NAIA national tournament appearances.

His younger brother, Noah, recently entered the transfer portal after spending his first two seasons at the University of Wyoming, where Wicks spent the last three years as an assistant.

The sophomore point guard averaged 14.5 points before his campaign ended in February because of a second concussion sustained during the season.

“I'm extremely grateful for this opportunity to serve the men's basketball program, the university, and the entire Green Bay community,” Nic Reynolds said. “I'm excited to be able to help build something special here in Green Bay. This is the way.”

Adam Owens

Owens joined UWGB last year under former coach Will Ryan.

Wicks said Owens won him over the minute he stepped on campus.

"I am beyond thankful for my time in Green Bay and can't wait to build Green Bay's winning tradition with Coach Wicks,” Owens said. “Green Bay is a passionate community and Coach Wicks fits that build. His energy is very infectious, and I'm humbled for the chance to be part of it."
