MADISON – Greg Gard’s players will get some extra time to rest for their key Big Ten men’s basketball game Wednesday at Maryland.
UW officials announced late Thursday that the Badgers’ game set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Northwestern has been postponed because of COVID-19 issues within the Wildcats’ program.
Both schools and the Big Ten will work to reschedule the game.
Northwestern’s game Wednesday at Iowa was postponed but has been rescheduled for Jan. 31.
UW (12-5, 4-3 Big Ten) is coming off a 63-60 victory Tuesday against Penn State.
Forward Tyler Wahl returned to the lineup after missing three games because of an ankle injury but clearly wasn’t as explosive as he had been before the injury, particularly on post-up moves.
UW lost guard Max Klesmit late in the first half after the guard took an elbow to the mouth and needed medical attention.
It is unclear whether Klesmit would have been ready to play Saturday at Northwestern.
The postponement means UW’s next game is Wednesday at Maryland. The Terrapins (10-9, 3-5) recorded a 64-58 victory Thursday night over visiting Michigan (10-8, 4-3).
Maryland hosts Purdue (18-1, 7-1) on Sunday before welcoming UW.
The Badgers opened Big Ten play last month with a 64-59 victory over the Terrapins.
Maryland is just 1-4 in road games this season but is 9-1 at home. The latter record includes a 71-66 victory over Illinois to open league play.
