VA Coronavirus Testing, Hospitalizations Up, 19K Fully Vaccinated

VIRGINIA — The seven-day average of coronavirus cases continues to rise in Virginia, reaching 5,148 on Tuesday. There were 4,561 additional coronavirus cases were reported on Tuesday, 1,071 of which are in Northern Virginia. There were 84 new coronavirus deaths reported in Virginia on Tuesday, according to the Virginia Department of Health.

Current hospitalizations also reached a new high of 3,185, which includes 582 in the intensive care units and 349 on ventilators. These COVID-19 patients are a portion of the 13,482 hospital beds currently occupied in Virginia. In all, Virginia has 16,476 staffed hospital beds. According to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, 1,023 of 2,884 ventilators are in use among all Virginia hospital patients. ICU occupancy stands at 35 percent.

Another new high is the seven-day average of PCR testing encounters reported daily. Virginia's seven-day average of daily tests is 30,357 as of Jan. 8, but the state first surpassed an average of 30,000 daily tests on Dec. 23. As for the positive rate of tests, the average is slightly down after reaching 17 percent in early January. As of Jan. 8, the seven-day average is 16.4 percent, while Northern Virginia's average is 14.5 percent.

Case, hospitalization and testing records for the state come as more health districts are making COVID-19 vaccinations available to additional groups. Health districts in Northern Virginia and other locations were allowed to start phase 1b, allowing people 75 and older as well as residents of homeless shelters, correctional facilities, migrant work camps and certain essential worker groups to be eligible next. Residents eligible for vaccinations in phase 1b should check their local health district for information.

As of Tuesday, 200,402 doses have been administered in Virginia, and a total of 773,825 have been distributed to date. There are 181,316 people with at least one dose, and 19,086 have received their second dose. Fairfax County, the state's most populous locality, leads with 24,423 doses given and 2,450 people fully vaccinated.

According to demographic information from VDH, 132,032 vaccine recipients are female and 60,341 are male. Information was not available for 8,029 people.

Among age groups, 43,317 doses have been given in the 30s age group, 41,966 for the 50s age group, 41,291 for the 40s age group, 28,772 for the 60s age group and 27,675 for the 20s age group. The 70s age group has 8,828 doses given, and the 80 and over age group has 7,731 doses given.

So far, hospitals have administered the most doses (105,191) in the state. Local health departments have given 42,456 doses, long-term care facilities have given 22,375, medical practices have given 12,779, other community providers have given 15,988 and pharmacies have given 1,613.

  • Alexandria: 8,248 cases, 458 hospitalizations, 91 deaths; increase of 92 cases and two hospitalizations

  • Arlington County: 10,202 cases, 687 hospitalizations, 186 deaths; increase of 85 cases

  • Fairfax County: 50,278 cases, 3,085 hospitalizations, 715 deaths; increase of 438 cases, 13 hospitalizations and eight deaths

  • Fairfax City: 340 cases, 25 hospitalizations, 10 deaths: increase of nine cases

  • Falls Church: 208 cases, 18 hospitalizations, six deaths: no change

  • Loudoun County: 15,604 cases, 668 hospitalizations, 165 deaths; increase of 161 cases and one death

  • Manassas: 3,167 cases, 148 hospitalizations, 29 deaths; increase of 18 cases

  • Manassas Park: 999 cases, 65 hospitalizations, eight deaths; increase of four cases

  • Prince William County: 28,796 cases, 1,261 hospitalizations, 267 deaths; increase of 264 cases, three hospitalizations and three deaths
