A man in Thailand has gone the extra mile, literally, to show his love for his girlfriend this Valentine's Day.

56-year-old Suthep “Maew” Promjit left his hometown of Nakhon Nayok in Central Thailand on 14 January on foot with the aim of arriving in Satun just in time for Valentine’s Day to propose to his girlfriend.

With the two provinces being almost 1,200 kilometres apart, Suthep began his journey accompanied by his 50-year-old friend, Niwat Thongwithi, who is riding a “saleng” (motorcycle with an improvised sidecar).

Suthep has already lost more than 17 kilograms since he began his journey, and said that he is elated that he was able to show his wife-to-be the lengths he would take to prove how much he loves her.

Suthep and his girlfriend, Thanapa Khiaw-on, also 56 years old, met on TikTok five years ago.

Love knows no bounds

He hopes that his journey will inspire those who are abusive or unfaithful in their relationships to pay attention.

“I want people who abuse their families and loved ones, as well as those who are unfaithful to their wives, to pay attention to this journey,” he said.

Netizens have been cheering him on as he concludes his journey on 14 February, and his small gesture of love is a reminder that sometimes the simplest gestures can bring the greatest joy.

At a time when social media and public transportation have filled the gap of long distance between two lovers, Suthep proved that he would walk 500 miles, and 500 more, just to be the man who walks a thousand miles and falls down at his girlfriend’s door. Upon marriage, Suthep said that he and his wife plan to travel around Thailand for their honeymoon.
