Valley Baptist food drive feeds summer kids
Jun. 21—HARLINGEN — A food drive will provide cereal to kids who might otherwise not have an breakfast at all.
The Valley Baptist Health System donated about 2,500 boxes of cereal Tuesday morning to the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley.
"Every year Valley Baptist does a cereal drive to benefit the Food Bank and help folks that are struggling with food insecurity throughout the Valley," said Matt Lynch, communications manager for Valley Baptist.
"What we do is, every year we have this cereal drive that is a week long," Lynch said. "It was all last week. We encouraged the community and our employees, our physicians, everyone that is associated with the hospital — or not — to come out and basically support their neighbors and their friends."
Manny Vela, CEO of Valley Baptist — Harlingen, said the hospital is "honored" to partner with The Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley.
The partnership, he said, would help supply children and families with "much-need nutritional meals over the summertime."
"Valley Baptist is in the business of health and wellness, and this is our opportunity to ensure that our population stays well through the summertime," he said. "We understand that the school districts provide an enormous amount of help during the school year and throughout the summertime. We just don't want anybody to fall through the cracks."
